British Lung Foundation Leaflets available ahead of World TB Day in a variety of languages

To mark this year’s World TB Day the British Lung Foundation promoted their free TB information leaflets, which are now available in six different languages.

As well as in English and Welsh, the leaflets are available in Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi, Turkish and Urdu and provide information on the signs and symptoms of the disease, how it is diagnosed and treatments available.

TB is on the rise in the UK and currently affects more than 8,000 people each year. BME communities in the UK tend to be disproportionately affected by TB so it is essential that information is available to patients in a variety of languages so more people are aware of the symptoms of TB and can be diagnosed and treated earlier.

TB is particularly problematic because it can cause no immediate illness and can remain dormant for many years before the symptoms (bad cough, bloodstained sputum (phlegm) and chest pain) become prevalent.Appetite loss and fever are also common symptoms, as well as weight loss.

TB can be easily treated after diagnosis, however it can be fatal if it is not treated and such treatment can sometimes be difficult.

Dame Helena Shovelton, Chief Executive of the British Lung Foundation commented, 'the BLF is very proud to have produced leaflets which can contribute to reducing the impact of a disease such as TB’.She added, ‘TB affects more people in the UK than the majority of nations in Western Europe and we believe that it requires more attention nationally.Allowing people access to materials that they can easily understand is certainly a good way to draw such attention’
