Customer gets compensation for shop floor accident

A woman who slipped on two grapes when in the Bath branch of Marks and Spencers (M & S) has been offered nearly £30,000 in an out-of court settlement. Jeanette Plummer, aged 62, broke her shoulder as a result of the accident in October 2005 and has planned surgery to alleviate the residual problems caused by her injury. Mrs Plummer claims to be restricted physically and believes her forthcoming medical treatment will help to reduce these limitations.

The claim against M & S has taken three years to produce a settlement as it involved complicated circumstances: it could be argued in such a case that the fallen grapes may have been left on the floor by the negligent acts of other customers as opposed to the staff of the company in question for example. M & S issued a statement describing customer safety as a priority.
