Footballer considers legal action

An ex-Premier League football player is considering legal action after he contracted a hospital superbug while being treated for an injury.

Jamie Lawrence, who used to play for Bradford City, went into Northwick Park Hospital to have six stitches in his right knee.

The 38-year-old initially thought he would be back playing for his current team, Harrow Borough, within three weeks.

However, a series of complications allegedly saw him contract the superbug MRSA - which is difficult to treat due to the antibiotic resistance of the bacteria.

Mr Lawrence said: "I can't even drive or do anything. It has been a joke - it was one cock-up after another. I am going to see my legal people. I will be taking it further."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the North West London Hospital Trust, which runs Northwick Park, said it is difficult for the trust to comment on the source of his infection "given this is something he could have picked up before coming to hospital or after he was discharged".
