Widow of mesothelioma victim secures £700k

The widow of a man who died from the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma has been successful in her claim for compensation.

During a recent high court ruling, Susan Smith was awarded damages of more than £700,000, the Burton Mail reports.

Her late husband, Michael Smith, died at the age of 52 from the disease - which affects the lining of the lungs or abdomen and is more common in men than women.

Ms Smith alleged that two of his former employers had exposed him to asbestos.

Judge Oliver-Jones QC rejected her claim against J and M Morris (Electrical Contractors) but accepted that Mr Smith had been exposed to asbestos during his job as a foreman for the Co-Op.

In his role, he had been responsible for a number of duties, including dealing with asbestos ceiling tiles while conducting wiring work.

He worked for the firm between 1982 and 1987.
