A hospital has been issued a fine of £8,000 after one of its workers suffered an electric shock.

The accident occurred at Conquest Hospital, which is situated in the east Sussex town of Hastings, when a member of staff was operating a steam cleaner.

As a result of the incident, he required surgery and is now unable to use his right hand.

In addition, he suffers from headaches, deteriorated eyesight and numbness to his face.

"It is well known that electricity and water do not mix and there is an increased risk of an electric shock or even death," stated Health and Safety Executive inspector Liz Smith.

During a hearing at Hastings magistrates' court, East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust pleaded guilty to breaching the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

In addition to being fined, the organisation was ordered to pay costs of £8,466.
